Adi's HiFi Blog

The HiFi topic has been on my mind for years, with everything that goes with it. During this time I have listened to, tested and reported on a number of devices on various social media channels.

I have summarized the previous test reports here for you to read. At irregular intervals I try to keep a small HiFi blog as long as I have time.
The content relates to my personal experiences in testing and listening and may not be consistent with others.

You also find guides, e.g. for preparing digital music collections, Roon and much more, with more to follow.

Please allow some time until all of my Blogs are also available in english. If one is missing check back later.
I hope you enjoy reading here, and if you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

What is an AV processor and what current models are there?

The List as PDF

Although the AV receiver is a simple one-box solution, it does have its drawbacks:

  • It often lacks the tuning and calibration options found on higher-end AV receivers and processors.
  • The built-in amplification somewhat limits you in terms of the speakers or rooms they are suitable for.

Preamps or processors are the brains behind any mid- to high-end home theater system. They are similar to AV receivers in that they offer source switching and decoding of all the different surround sound formats, audio/video processing, and volume control.

But unlike receivers, preamps/processors do not have built-in amplification and are intended solely as the "brains" of the system. This means they usually have more processing power. Consequently, additional channels or flexible tuning and calibration options can be included. They also cost more because they contain higher-quality components for higher performance.

Some more advanced AV processors also allow upgrades to both the software and hardware to keep up with the latest technologies.

Because I couldn't find an overview when looking for a new device, I took the trouble to put together an overview and am happy to make this list available to you.

It may not be incomplete and may not contain all the information I was looking for.

I have recorded the key functions that are relevant to my search. The model name contains links to the manufacturer's websites, so you don't have to search the web.

Only models with HDMI 2.1 are included in the list because these correspond to the state of the art in 2025.

I hope you enjoy reading and if you have any questions, please contact me using the contact form.
